Ruscus Hybrids

Ruscus x microphyllum is presumed to be a hybrid as it is only known in the female state and is associated with human habitation.

There are possible hybrid plants in the Caucasus between R. aculeatus and R. colchicus. These are not confirmed.

The late Peter Yeo of Cambridge did produce hybrid plants but did not write up the work (pers com.); they are believed lost.

I started by producing hybrid plants between species of Section Platyruscus. This has shown compatibility between the species. Later, work started on hybrids between the two sections. The result is a plant with branches like Section Ruscus and large cladodes like Section Platyruscus but without the spine tip. The reverse hybrid with Section Platyruscus as the female plant is more like Section Platyruscus in appearance.
